The travel!

Hi Everyone,
Just wanted to let you know that we made it to the Rafiki Village in Malawi safe and sound. The trip was very long and tiring, but once we started out on the road to Mzuzu (about a 4 hour car ride from the airport) I was very awake and excited. What an eye opening car ride! This is a developing nation for sure. All along the road we saw brick or mud huts with straw roofs, men riding bikes with huge loads of wood or baskets or even metal barrels. We also saw women with babies strapped to their backs while they were working in the fields and cooking, and we saw lots of goats (extremely valuable here) and and everything was just so exciting and amazing. Almost no one has electricity, and they all cook on open fires outside. The mostly do not have cars, and they walk miles and miles each day. Near the equator the sun goes down around 6:00pm every day, all year, and so they come home from the fields or where ever to a dinner cooked on the fire. By the time the eat it is pitch black, then they sleep and get up in the morning with the sun. Everyone here is so friendly and incredibly excited to see us. They are welcoming and loving. Many rural villagers on the road waved to us "mzumgu," white people." We were greeted at the Rafiki village around 8:00 pm by all of the misisonaries who had cooked us a meal and sang welcoming songs to us. We are very tired but thrilled to be here.
There is a problem with the guest house computer, so we won't be able to use it until it is fixed. (I'm borrowing another missionaries personal computer.) We love you all, and we'll update you when we can. Praise God that we are here safely, and pray that God will use us for his glory in the weeks to come. Goodnight!!
Love, Rebecca and Nick

This is our team before the long journey to Malawi! From left to right:

Andy Forbes, Sandy Lu and Fred Newport and you know who.

This is us chasing the African Sunrise. And yes, this is what we see everyday.

Below are pictures of the drive from Lilongwe airport to Mzuzu, the city where the village is.

I have never seen such beautiful people. Rebecca, I am so proud of the woman you have become. I have always wondered what you were going to do with the boundless energy and talent with which God has blessed you (and all of us because of you). The blog is wonderful. I can almost smell and hear the country with your descriptions and pictures. How are your reeds there? (Sorry, I can help being a geek).

Love,
Patti
